Even 110 years after it was first synthesized, acetylsalicylic acid, the active ingredient of Aspirin®, continues to fascinate scientists worldwide. Despite being one of the most comprehensively investigated medicines ever, the substance remains the focus of numerous medical studies (see also page 51).
 
Every year, it is estimated that some 3,500 scientific articles are published describing new mechanisms of action, providing evidence of new indications or investigating its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
 
New formulations of the active ingredient of Aspirin® are tested at Bayer HealthCare’s laboratories in Morristown, New Jersey, USA.
