Cardiovascular disease is the single leading cause of death worldwide. But myocardial infarction or ischemic stroke do not inevitably result in death. Around 20 million people survive such events every year and then require medical care. And if their risk of suffering a recurrence is to be reduced, a suitably effective preventive treatment is required.

Study involving approximately 12,000 patients
Acetylsalicylic acid, the active ingredient of Aspirin®, inhibits the coagulation of blood; doctors therefore frequently prescribe it for patients who have suffered a cardiovascular disease (CVD) event for the purpose of secondary prevention. A new study sponsored by Bayer HealthCare is now under way. Called ARRIVE (Aspirin® to Reduce Risk of Initial Vascular Events), it is designed to further demonstrate the efficacy and safety of Aspirin® in preventing first CVD events in individuals at moderate risk (primary prevention). Read more about the planned study.
