In the elderly and patients with conditions such as diabetes, the body is unable to heal skin injuries on its own. This results in chronic wounds. What was initially a harmless injury may consequently turn into a serious illness. A not uncommon outcome, for example, is amputation. Worldwide, the number of patients per year requiring treatment is already approaching 100 million, a figure that includes 300,000 leg amputations alone. The costs are therefore huge.

Joint project between subgroups
Researchers at Bayer Innovation (BIG) want to improve the options for the treatment of chronic wounds. In association with colleagues from different Bayer subgroups and external partners, they are now developing an entire portfolio for effective wound healing. Read how bioabsorbable fibers and even expertise in the field of polyurethanes are opening up new treatment approaches.
