Painful periods: Endometriosis affects many women, with an estimated 11 million sufferers in the European Union alone.
For some women, the menstruation cycle is accompanied by severe pain. Women who are repeatedly affected by diffuse pain in the lower abdomen and back may be afflicted by a serious condition: in up to 80 percent of all women with chronic lower abdomen pain, the cause is diagnosed as growth of mucosa from the uterus somewhere else in the body, known in medical terms as endometriosis.

Research into endometriosis by hormone experts
In many cases, endometriosis is not discovered until those afflicted consult a gynecologist about their inability to become pregnant. The only way to reach a definite diagnosis is to examine the inside of the abdomen through a laparoscope. The most common treatment method at present is surgical removal or sclerosis of the diseased area, but this is associated with a high relapse rate. Scientists in Bayer HealthCare’s Bayer Schering Pharma Division are now working on new active ingredients to treat this painful gynecological disease. Find out here which therapeutic approaches these scientists are targeting and what successes they have already achieved.
