Polyurethanes for effective cosmetics without solvents

Cosmetics are no longer confined to women; today, hair sprays, antiwrinkle creams and styling gels are available for men too. Countless cans, tubes and tubs fill the endless shelves in drugstores, promising perfect hair and skin care. However, the results are not always satisfactory.

But now a team of researchers from Bayer MaterialScience want to change this. They are developing special additives for cosmetic products on the basis of polyurethanes – or PU for short. The high-molecular weight substances ensure that sunblock, for example, is well tolerated and provides prolonged protection, even after bathing. The PU products also increase the adhesion of other cosmetic products enormously. This means that the color particles in mascara and foundation creams, for example, remain on the skin instead of dirtying the wearer’s blouse or shirt collar.
