Strokes and heart attacks are dangerous conditions. In the past they largely affected men, but recent studies have shown that nowadays it is primarily women who suffer from cardiovascular diseases. The Women’s Health Study, the biggest investigation ever carried out with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), the active ingredient in Aspirin®, has produced some encouraging findings.
Broad spectrum of activity
Even a tiny dose of ASA reduces the risk of women suffering a stroke. Above a certain age the same drug also protects against myocardial infarction – and it is additionally effective in relieving pain, fever and inflammation. It’s amazing what this versatile product can do – and it has been helping patients for over 100 years. The findings from the Women’s Health Study will now be incorporated into the drafting of global guidelines for using ASA, and perhaps doctors will soon be able to prescribe acetylsalicylic acid as a preventive measure for patients with certain risk factors. The following article contains details of the study.
