Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in the industrialized countries. Occluded arteries play a key role in this condition. If the coronary vessels are affected, the result can be attacks such as angina pectoris or cardiac arrhythmia. In order to be able to effectively treat these conditions, which in many ways still baffle the medical community, researchers at Bayer HealthCare are working on a new active substance.

Always on the right beat

Biologists and chemists are using Bayer’s substance library containing approximately 1.7 million molecular compounds to develop a substance that can prevent an abnormal rise in the heart rate. If this endeavor proves successful, a completely new approach to the treatment of angina pectoris and other heart diseases could be found. The following article contains details on this research and potential applications.
