Bayer researcher Dr. Xin Ma loves a challenge. She left China in December 1987 and began a long journey through the Bayer Group, stopping off in all kinds of places. Ma is familiar with the entire value creation chain at Bayer HealthCare, from Research through Development to risk assessment and portfolio management. In the summer of 2009, the chemist returned to her native land to set up the Global Drug Discovery and Innovation Center China for the company. This was a pioneering achievement for Bayer in her own country – and an important contribution to outstanding research and Bayer HealthCare’s Asia strategy.
Finding Her Feet on Asian Soil
But even though the Bayer researcher was born and raised in China, after 20 years abroad she felt rather strange and a little lost in her home country: this delicate, dark-eyed Asiatic lady had to completely reorient herself on Asian soil and in the Chinese research environment.
