When pain becomes the rule

Relieving women’s pain: menstruation can sometime cause unbearable pain.

They’re not life-threatening. But extremely strong menstrual bleeding and conditions such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids can cause at times unbearable pain to some women. What’s more, they can also be the reason behind a woman's inability to conceive. And these diseases are not rare: up to 10 percent of women in the western industrialized countries suffer from endometriosis.

Diagnostic test to make surgery unnecessary
Scientists at Bayer HealthCare are working on novel treatments for women’s diseases and have now developed the first effective product to treat endometriosis. It suppresses ovulation and keeps women’s estrogen levels low, thus considerably reducing the pain they suffer. The researchers are also working on a diagnostic test that will help gynecologists identify the condition by means of a tissue sample – thus avoiding surgery.
