The symptoms of pulmonary hypertension are similar to those of heart failure or lung disease. The condition first manifests itself with palpitations, fatigue, breathing difficulties or fainting. In many cases, this life-threatening disease is not recognized in time. Confirming the diagnosis of this condition is a complex matter involving measurement of the blood pressure in the respiratory system by means of a right-heart catheter. A diagnosis that comes too late can be life-threatening for sufferers. Up to 17 million people around the world are affected by pulmonary hypertension.

Diagnosis at an early stage helps sufferers
When the disease is diagnosed early on, however, modern medications can at least relieve the symptoms. Medications to treat this disease have only been available for approximately ten years, however. Bayer HealthCare researchers are now developing new active ingredients.
